Desert Darlin'

Editorial design

What is

Desert

Darlin'?

Desert Darlin' is a culture magazine for the proud western women of the USA,

searching for empowerment as young ladies, arming themselves with all they

need to lead stylish and informed lives while under the wild desert sunshine.

Desert Darlin' is ready to lead women on the journey of finding individuality

and strength by connecting to their deep roots.

My Texas roots inspired me to build this project.

Work

Process:

For this academic exercise, I conceived a magazine business.

I generated then company persona and used typography, color scheme,

logo design, illustrations, copy and layout to create product desire.

Grit, Glory, Dolly

Typographic Feature

Grit, Glory, Dolly tells a story of self-discovery and achievement through hard work and perseverance. Dolly Parton is interviewed to shed light on the successful life she lives and the music she writes and has written.

As this was a typographic assessment, typography was the only design medium

I was able to work in. This challenge brought me out of my comfort zone. I was able

to successfully conquer it by using Dolly's song lyrics and mimicking her songbook handwriting. There are scribbles underlining and circling text; this script effect

echos in and out of the pages.

Austin Eats

Illustrative

Feature

As illustration is a strong suit of mine, taking this feature on was an exciting project for me; the possibilities were endless.

The article, Austin Eats, shares what great food truck options there are in the Austin, Texas area. I Illustrated the food discussed, incorporating a whimsical cloud of aroma drifting throughout the pages. This created consistency, leading the reader from one page to the next.

Cloudscapes: Mark Maggiori

Typographic,

Illustrative &

Photographic

Feature

Cloudscapes: Mark Maggiori, tells an incredible story of an Italian artist who moved down south to live the true south western experience. His realistic paintings of the western landscape scenery earned him popularity. In particular, the clouds he paints are like no other. Miles Griffin interviews him on his experience painting and the fame he’s gained thus far.

Photography, illustrations, and typographic forms are intentionally used through these spreads to tell a story. The feature has a collage feel, intertwining the western landscape through imagery and illustration. The typographic elements give a light, airy and cloud-like form, connecting back to the name of the article.
